PATC Course: Earth Sciences Simulation Environments

Barcelona Supercomputing Centre,
within the UPC Campus Nord premises.

Target group: Level: (All courses are designed for specialists with at least 1st cycle degree or similar background experience) For trainees with some theoretical and practical knowledge Prerequisites: At least University degree in progress on Earth Sciences, Computer Sciences or related area Basic knowledge of UNIX Knowledge of C, FORTRAN, MPI or openMP is recommended Knowledge of Earth Sciences data formats is recommended (grib, netcdf, hdf,…)

Cost: There is no registration fee. The attendees would need to cover the expenses for travel, accommodation and meals.

Day 1
9:00-10:40: Introduction to Earth Sciences fundamentals and modeling
11:00-12:40: Unix/Linux and HPC introduction, environment, BSC facilities, PRACE and RES
Lunch break
14:00-15:40: HPC hands on tutorial. At the end of this tutorial, the students can connect, compile and execute jobs in Mare Nostrum 3.
16:00-17:40: Analysis and visualisation methods and tools for model outputs

Day 2
9:00-10:00: Lecture about NMMB/BSC model.
10:00-11:00: Lecture about building, setting up and run of the model.    
11:30-13:00: Model hands-on. Students will run a prepared case.
Lunch break
14:00-15:40: Lecture about computational earth sciences application cases. Analyzing and improving an Earth Sciences model.
16:00-17:40: Analysis hands-on. Students will apply previous tools to the outputs created in the morning.
