Context And Mission

The Computational Biology group, led by ICREA professor Alfonso Valencia, is looking for a student to contribute to a project to study the effect of gene diet interactions using computational representations of the nutritional input for metabolic models. This will allow to incorporate publicly available databases and resources and will facilitate reproducible calculations from chemically complex components to the quantities of specific molecules that are presumably available for uptake by the cell types of interest.

The project will be framed in the context of a collaboration with an external collaborator expert in the field of nutrition.

To achieve this objective, the student will perform:
1.- Reconstruction and analysis of context-specific models to study the effect of different biocompounds in the metabolic phenotype of different cell lines.
2.- Application of constraint-based methods to run different in-silico experiments and evaluate the predicting capability of the models.
3.- Application of nutritional transcriptomic datasets to metabolic models to identify pattern changes in metabolites and essential genes in cancer samples with or without drug combinations.
4.- Classification methods to identify food biocompounds with potential to inhibit tumoral cell growth and dissemination.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic research group within the Life Sciences department, which integrates independent senior scientists that work on various aspects of computational biology, ranging from bioinformatics for genomics and proteomics to computational biochemistry and text mining. The Researcher will work in a highly sophisticated HPC environment, will have access to systems and computational infrastructures, and will establish collaborations with experts in different areas.

Key Duties

Requirements

  • Education
    • Degree in Bioinformatics, Biotechnology or any field related to biomedicine
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

  • Competences
    • Fluency in spoken and written English.
    • Good communication and presentation skills.
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team.

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Life Sciences Department
  • We offer a part-time contract, a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, tickets restaurant, private health insurance, fully support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Temporary - 6 months renewable
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: 01/04/2021
