The aim is to create a play about the science of climate change, combining the work of climate researchers, social scientists and artists
The Department of Earth Sciences and the Computational Social Sciences Program of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) are collaborating closely with the Instituto de Ciencia y Teatro (INCITE), to validate a new methodology for co-creation of scientific theatre, under the CREARTE project.
The aim of this innovative project is to create a play about the science of climate change, combining the work of climate researchers, social scientists and artists. The co-creative process and the co-creation methodology implemented are intended to be applicable to other thematic areas of interest and serve as an example in the development of artistic creation for the dissemination of science.
In the first phase of the project, the collection and analysis of qualitative data has been completed, in which the artists have undergone an ethnographic immersion process in the Department of Earth Sciences at BSC, interviewing several researchers and participating in focus groups to delve deeper into different subthemes of climate change.
Currently, the creative process is focused on defining the themes and subthemes of the work. To this end, in dynamic co-creation sessions, researchers and artists are evaluating, selecting and delving deeper into the themes that have emerged in the focus groups.
The third phase of dramaturgy to create the play will soon begin. Thus, the fourth phase of production of the scientific play will take place between April and May 2025.
The scientific theatre piece aims to enrich the dissemination of information about how science is done and what it means to tackle a problem scientifically, by observing scientists in their real context. The general public will learn how climate change researchers carry out their scientific research today, and how this process has evolved from a historical perspective.
The premiere of the play, the exact date and place of which will be announced shortly, is scheduled for June 2025.
CREARTE project is developed in collaboration with the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología – Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.
