Cellnex Telecom, Lenovo and Elewit (technological subsidiary of the Grupo Red Eléctrica) have led the investment round in the Nearby Computing start-up, an initiative of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) , with an investment of approximately 2 million euros. The investment raised in this seed-round will serve to reinforce the growth of the company, by promoting the global commercialization of Edge and 5G products that make up Nearby Computing's value proposition.
Investors will also collaborate in the commercialization of Nearby Computing in the markets where they operate, as well as to integrate the start-up in some of its most advanced innovation programs, where the technologies that the company develops will contribute to enhancing infrastructures, products and services that these corporations promote and manage.
Cellnex Telecom, was already a shareholder of Nearby Computing, and has increased its participation in the start-up “to continue working together - Oscar Pallarols, Commercial & Innovation Director of Cellnex has highlighted - and grow in the development of Edge Computing solutions, one of the basic pillars of the telecommunications infrastructure ecosystem that will be necessary for the full deployment of 5G”.
For Elewit, this is its first investment in a 5G-related company. "This is a key technology for us," says Silvia Bruno, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer of Elewit.
For his part, the vice president for Telco and Edge Computing at Lenovo Charles Ferland, states that “like Nearby Computing, Lenovo shares the vision of providing the best technology in its class, that is easy to use and solves real problems. We are proud to be part of the Nearby Computing project. "
Two years of Nearby Computing
Nearby Computing, created in 2018, is specialized in orchestration and automation of network processes, focused on Edge Computing and 5G, an area with high growth potential associated with its industrial applications or city management and large infrastructures.
With only two years of experience, Nearby Computing already carries out its commercial activity both in Spain and in the rest of Europe, North America and the Middle East and maintains a close collaboration with a wide network of first-rate partners. With this additional investment, it will be able to consolidate the projects already started and expand its R&D capacity, commercialization on a global scale and service to its clients.
