Sun, sea and HPC with PRACE and BSC

26 January 2018

Do your interests cover advanced computing architectures or parallel programming? Apply now for your chance to spend the summer break working in Spain, on critical advances for high-performance computing (HPC).

PRACE Summer of HPC 2018 is now open for applications from early-stage postgraduate and late-stage undergraduate students who are interested in spending July and August in a top HPC centre in Europe, one of which is Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).

“Spending the summer break working on these projects is a great way to progress towards being an HPC specialist,” says Maria Ribera Sancho, Education and Training manager, as well as on-site coordinator of the Summer of HPC 2018. “We are delighted to be participating in the PRACE Summer of HPC for the sixth year running.”

In the sixth edition of this programme, BSC will co-ordinate four different projects, two of which will be hosted by BSC and the other two by Universitat Jaume I in Valencia.

In the first project, the student will work with the team at BSC in order to develop an automatic frequency scaler. Depending on the results, the outcome could lead to the publication of a scientific paper.

In the second project, the aim of the stay is to produce a novel technique adapted to the different steps of general solvers for partial differential equations (PDEs) by means of a multi-partitioning technique, and test its viability using code coupling.

About the PRACE Summer of HPC

The PRACE Summer of HPC is a PRACE outreach and training programme that offers summer placements at top HPC centres across Europe to late-stage undergraduates and early-stage postgraduate students. Up to twenty top applicants from across Europe will be selected to participate. Participants will spend two months working on projects related to PRACE technical or industrial work and will produce a report and a visualisation or video of their results.

The programme will run from July 1st to August 31st 2018, with a kick-off training week at Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre attended by all participants. Flights, accommodation and a stipend will be provided to all successful applicants. Two prizes will be awarded to the participants who produce the best project and best embody the outreach spirit of the programme.
