The jury praised the innovative design of the architecture of the new MareNostrum 5, which will advance science in all areas
The majority of the Ciutat de Barcelona 2023 Prize Jury has decided to award the Ciutat de Barcelona Prize for Experimental Sciences and Technology to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) for the innovative design of the architecture of the new MareNostrum 5 supercomputer and its implementation, which keeps the city of Barcelona as an international benchmark in high-performance computing.
Thanks to its unique computational architecture, MareNostrum 5 will advance science in all areas, from the development of digital twins of the planet Earth and the human body, to the search for new treatments for diseases such as cancer, the design of healthier and more sustainable cities, or the search for new energy sources and new materials.
The jury, made up of Maria Pau Ginebra (president), Ulises Cortés, Pep Vidal, Anna Sanpera and Maria Bernabeu, also decided to give a special mention to the Hypatia I team, made up of Carla Conill, Mariona Badenas-Agustí, Adriana Farrés Basiana, Laia Ribas, Núria Jar, Neus Sabaté and Cesca Cufí-Prat, for their scientific mission on the simulated Mars station and their work to promote scientific and technological (STEM) careers among girls.
The prizes, worth 9,500 euros, will be awarded on 13 February at a ceremony in the Saló de Cent of Barcelona City Hall.
