BSC researcher Asun Lera St. Clair, member of the Citizen Assembly for Climate Expert Group

The BSC researcher, a specialist in the social and human dimensions of climate change, will advise the Spanish Government on an initiative that seeks to promote social debate on the search for solutions to the climate crisis.

 

Dr. Asun Lera St.Clair, Senior Advisor in the Earth Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), has been appointed to the independent board of experts of the Spanish Citizen Assembly for Climate, whose composition and functioning have been announced this Friday, October 8 by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO).

Dr. Lera St. Clair, who is a specialist in the social and human dimensions of climate change, is one of the 16 experts who will advise the Spanish Government on this initiative. The Citizen Assembly for Climate aims to become an instrument to strengthen the channels of dialogue and citizen participation that allow establishing a social debate on the search for solutions to the climate crisis.

The launch of the Citizen Assembly for Climate is one of the priority lines of action of the Declaration on the Climate and Environmental Emergency in Spain, enshrined in the Climate Change and Energy Transition Law. It will be made up of one hundred people who represent the diversity of Spanish society and must propose to the administrations, as well as to the different economic and social actors, the preferences of the public in matters of climate action.

Dr. Asun Lera St. Clair has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Bergen (Norway) and a Master's in Philosophy and Ethics from the University of South Florida (USA), as well as a BA in Philosophy from the University of Barcelona. Since last year, she leads the Digital Assurance Research Center in DNV Group (Norway) in the Research and Development area.

Senior Advisor in BSC's Earth Sciences Department since 2018, Dr. Lera St. Clair was lead author for the fifth Assessment Report on Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

She is also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Sustainability in the Digital Age Initiative of Future Earth (an initiative promoted by the UN and UNESCO, among others), the Advisory Committee for Sustainable Development of the Catalan Government (CADS), and the Horizon Europe Mission Board for Climate Change Adaptation and Societal Transformations.
