BSC joins in the UN Ocean Decade Conference 2024

05 April 2024

The Earth Sciences Department will have a stand at the conference to showcase all the ocean-related projects currently under development at the BSC

Under the motto ‘Delivering the science we need for the ocean we want’, Barcelona will hold from 10th to 12th of April 2024, the well-recognised and influential conference UN Ocean Decade Conference. This year’s edition will bring the ocean sciences community to the Catalan capital to celebrate achievements and set joint priorities for the oceans' future.

The aim is to generate dialogue across the whole science-policy-society interface, as well as to provide a global forum for governments, leaders, maritime sectors, philanthropy, universities, the private sector, NGOs and more to meet and catalyse new partnerships and collaborations.

The results of the expedition ‘Unexplored Seamounts of the Salas y Gómez Ridge’ and the current negotiations to create a blue corridor in the area will be presented by BSC researcher Ariadna Mecho at the “Ocean Decade MPA Forum: Progress, obstacles and solutions” forum organised as a satellite event of the UN Ocean Decade Conference.

This forum will explore four cross-cutting themes for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) over two days. Researcher Pablo Ortega, co-leader of the BSC’s Climate Variability and Change group, will also participate in the forum, presenting the advances of digital twins of ocean research and how they could be a powerful tool for creating climate-adapted MPA in the future.

The BSC’s Earth Sciences Department will hold a booth at the conference to present all the projects related to the ocean, with special emphasis on the European projects EERIE, RESCUE and Climateurope2.

Further participation of BSC’s researchers includes:
