The telecommunications company is integrating the Calíope system into its ‘Vodafone, Connected City’ platform.

Vodafone is incorporating air quality forecasts made at Barcelona Supercomputing Centre into its portfolio of Smart Cities services for public administration. The forecasts provided by the CALÍOPE air quality modelling system will form part of the Vodafone Connected City service, which is the company’s solution to allow public administration bodies to access ‘pay-as-you-go’ smart services that drive the move towards efficient, well-managed and liveable cities.

CALÍOPE offers forecasts of air quality in Spain and Europe for up to 48 hours in advance thanks to simulations and modelling carried out on the MareNostrum supercomputer. Using CALÍOPE, users can see air quality at particular points on the Spanish territory and view the concentrations of the main pollutants: ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and airborne particles. Such forecasts are vital for the management of control measures for air pollution and its effects on citizens and the environment.

Barcelona Supercomputing Center has signed an agreement with Vodafone for the technology to become part of services offered by the company to public administration bodies that adopt use of the Vodafone Connected City platform.
