Biography

Dr. Alex Marti is Group Leader for the Natural and Social Hazard group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and CEO of MITIGA Solutions, an award winning spin-off of the BSC that provides technological solutions to forecast and mitigate the impact of natural hazards across multiple industries. Dr. Marti underwent postgraduate and doctoral programs in Applied Physics and Geospatial Technologies from Rutgers, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Princeton and Exeter University before returning to Barcelona, where he received his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. During this time, he was awarded the prestigious Marie Curie Fellowship from the European Commission two times. At the BSC, Dr. Marti works on evaluating the early identification and forecast of both natural and social hazards, as well as their interdependence and interplay with environmental and societal factors, producing some of the most read papers in Nature. He has more than 15 years of international experience in R&D as researcher, developer, and project manager for the public and private sectors. At the academic level, he serves in ESADE and IESE MBA innovation programs, and has held Associate Professorships positions at different American Universities.
