Context And Mission

Within the Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, the Computational Earth Sciences group is looking for a junior Python developer to improve the Autosubmit workflow manager (https://pypi.python.org/pypi/autosubmit).

Autosubmit is a Python-based software which allows to create, manage and monitor climate and weather modelling experiments by using Computing Clusters and Supercomputers remotely via ssh, being able to combine multiple platforms in the same workflow. It is the tool used at the BSC to run experiments with the EC-Earth climate model, the NEMO ocean model, or the MONARCH air quality model. This kind of applications are really important due to the advent of new and more flexible software technologies that require of scalable and robust models orchestration procedures.

We need a proactive candidate with good programming skills to join our development team and improve the most used tool in the department by adding a new graphical layer in order to improve the user experience and boost the efficiency of this software.

Key Duties

  • Join the Autosubmit development team
  • Design and develop software improvements in an Agile environment
  • Work in the implementation of a first graphical user interface for Autosubmit
  • Help to maintain the current operation on different HPC platforms
  • Contribute to user support by applying and deploying patches
  • Contribute to the documentation including all the new developments and features in the existing manuals


  • Education
    • Bachelor in Computer Science, Telecommunications or related discipline. Having a Master’s degree will be valued
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Excellent development skills in Python and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting languages (bash, …)
    • Previous knowledge of development and execution of scientific applications on parallel computers can be of help
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience of version control in a distributed team, including SVN or Git will be valued
  • Competences
    • Fluency in English
    • Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach
    • Willingness and capacity to learn about new technologies and procedures
    • Capacity to work and communicate in an international and interdisciplinary working environment
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team


  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department

  • Duration: Temporary - 30/09/2021 renewable
