Context And Mission
 
The Department of Earth Sciences of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), BSC-ES henceforth (bsc.es/earth-sciences) is one of the most active groups in air quality and atmospheric composition modelling, climate prediction and climate services in Europe. The department is currently composed of about 105 people, including scientists and technical and support staff, and is structured in four distinct but interacting research groups: Atmospheric Composition (AC), Climate Prediction, Earth System Services (ESS), and Computational Earth Sciences (CES).

BSC-ES is developing different aspects of a digital replica of the Earth based on a global climate model that can perform experiments at unprecedented resolutions. The development and use of this model open substantial technical and scientific challenges. Besides, this tool will be co-developed with a number of users with a broad range of profiles who will inform about the socio-economic priorities for the adaptation to climate change.

The Earth-Sciences department is looking for a Technical Coordinator to plan, monitor and manage all the activities related to its digital replica of the Earth. The candidate will interact with Earth Sciences research engineers and scientists as well as other BSC departments involved in the project. Moreover, the candidate will maintain the link with other members of a number of European consortia with similar interests and goals.

The candidate will operate under the Computational Earth Sciences group leader. This role could involve frequent travel within Europe.
 
Key Duties
 
  • Responsible for the development and monitoring of digital replica of the Earth activities at BSC
  • Support BSC-ES group leaders in the implementation of the activities to develop the digital replica of the Earth, including project management, financial supervision and human resources needs
  • Interact with the rest of the Consortia where BSC-ES will participate in this topic, including organising any workshops needed and the accompanying travel duties
  • Ensure the implementation and quality assurance of all the project documentation and deliverables
 
Requirements
 
  • Education
    • Having a Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Physics engineering, Mathematics, Physics or related discipline
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing research projects
    • Proven experience in interacting with internal and external partners
    • Ability to develop strong relationships and excellent influencing skills
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in developing climate models and the tools required for a user-oriented delivery will be valued
    • Fluency in spoken and written English, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued.
  • Competences
    • Ability to work independently, and to prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Capacity to interact and build strong relations with a diverse members/stakeholder/staff base
    • Ability to work in a professional environment and within a multidisciplinary research team
 
Conditions
 
  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
