Context And Mission

Within the Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center, the Atmospheric Composition (AC) group aims at better understanding and predicting the spatiotemporal variations of atmospheric pollutants along with their effects upon air quality, weather and climate. The AC group develops the Multiscale Online Non-hydrostatic AtmospheRe CHemistry model (MONARCH). MONARCH contains advanced chemistry and aerosol packages, and is coupled online with the Non-hydrostatic Multiscale Model (NMMB), which allows for running either global or high-resolution (convection-allowing) regional simulations, and is coupled with an aerosol data assimilation system based on the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter. The group contributes to a variety of forecasting activities. The dust component of MONARCH runs operationally at the first WMO Regional Specialized Meteorological Center for Atmospheric Sand and Dust Forecast (i.e., the Barcelona Dust Forecast Center, BDFC), and contributes to multi-model ensemble forecasts both at the WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System Regional Center (WMO SDS-WAS RC) for Northern Africa, the Middle East and Europe, and the International Cooperative for Aerosol Prediction (ICAP). Both WMO Regional Centers are co-hosted by BSC and the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET). The group also develops and maintains the CALIOPE air quality system (“CALIdad del aire Operacional Para España”), which provides high-resolution air quality forecasts over Europe and Spain using the in-house emission model HERMESv3.

The AC group searches for one junior research support engineer willing to work on the data curation process of the group data archive. The models and forecasts are enhanced by an intensive use of up-to-date observations, both for model evaluation and to feed the aerosol ensemble-based data assimilation system. The position will support systematic and detailed maintenance of the data used/produced by the group. The successful applicant will work closely with researchers of the group and research scientists from the Computational Earth Sciences group and collaborate in ongoing projects. Support in the execution and monitoring of experiments intensive in data production is also expected.

Key Duties

  • Data curation of a wide range of observational datasets, model reanalysis products and model experiment results
  • Apply existent solutions or program automated procedures to detect missing files, variables, layers, timeframes, or corrupted data
  • Analyze datasets by means of computed standardized diagnostics
  • Support researchers in the execution and monitoring of complex model experiments (ensemble data assimilation runs)
  • Close collaboration with research engineers of the Department to apply in-house solution in the data curation process
  • Interact with atmospheric composition scientists to understand and respond to their needs

Requirements

  • Education
    • A graduate degree in the physical sciences or engineering (e.g., Chemistry, Meteorology, Physics, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering)
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience with data manipulation and analysis
    • Experience in programming in Python, FORTRAN and R
    • Experience with UNIX/LINUX environments
    • Knowledge with Earth Modelling file types (NetCDF, HDF5, GRIB…) will be valued
    • Experience in similar fields will be valued
  • Competences
    • Capacity to interact with both atmospheric compositon and computer scientists
    • Fluent English, both written and spoken
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
