Context And Mission

The Atmospheric Composition (AC) group at the Earth Sciences Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) aims at better understanding and predicting the spatiotemporal variations of atmospheric pollutants along with their effects upon air quality, weather, climate and socio-economic sectors. This is addressed through the continuous development and application of numerical models over multiple scales, from weather to climate and from global to urban scales.

Coordinated by the AC group, BSC hosts, together with the Meteorological State Agency of Spain (AEMET), the WMO Barcelona Dust Regional Center ( This center manages and coordinates the research activities and operations of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) related to sand and dust storms. The Center provides access to available dust products and coordinates a network of collaborators (researchers, data providers and users’ communities) in Northern Africa, the Middle East and Europe. The activities of the center focus on facilitating access to the available dust information. The network around the Center promotes scientific collaborations that aim to deepen our understanding of the dust cycle and its variability, along with its impacts on key socio-economic sectors. Additionally, one of the core activities of the Center is to build capacity of end-users with the aim of promoting the use of dust products to address the risks associated with airborne dust.

The operational model of the WMO Barcelona Dust Regional Center is the Multiscale Online Non-hydrostatic AtmospheRe CHemistry model (MONARCH) whose developments are coordinated by the AC group. MONARCH contains advanced chemistry and aerosol packages, it allows for running either global or high-resolution (convection-allowing) regional simulations, and it is coupled with an aerosol data assimilation system based on the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter.

The AC group also hosts an AXA Chair on Sand and Dust Storms. This unique 15-year dust research programme is not only intended to support the WMO Regional Center, but also to widen the scope and relevance of mineral dust research at BSC.

We are looking for an outstanding researcher to coordinate the desert dust forecasting and services activities at BSC, including the WMO Barcelona Dust Regional Center, and other funded applied research projects in the field of mineral dust. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of the MONARCH model, the design of new dust operational forecast and climatological products useful for a variety of socio-economic sectors. The candidate will be based at the Atmospheric Composition (AC) group within the Earth Sciences Department and will benefit from the training program and BSC staff benefits: international multidisciplinary scientific environment, advanced research training, and advanced computational facilities.

Key Duties

  • Support the coordination of the WMO Barcelona Dust Regional Center
  • Support the coordination of ongoing mineral dust applied projects at BSC
  • Contribute to dust model developments, analyze model results, prepare charts and report the results
  • Perform innovative user-oriented research, understand user needs and facilitate technology transfer
  • Interact with users and partners to understand their needs and develop user tailored products
  • Communicate scientific results within the Department and in international conferences
  • Write quality papers in scientific journals
  • Interact with scientists from the different groups to favor synergies
  • Contributing to grant applications


  • Education
    • Having a PhD in Physics, Meteorology, Environmental engineering or related discipline
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Aerosol modeling experience in parallel computing environments
    • Ability to work in a professional environment and within a multidisciplinary research team
    • Demonstrated verbal communication and technical presentation skills in English
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in project coordination will be valued
    • Experience in dust modelling will be valued
    • Experience in operational forecasting will be valued
    • Computing skills in high-level computer languages (especially FORTRAN 77/90 and C) and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments will be valued
    • Programming languages (C, C++, Fortran, Python, R, ssh, bash) will be valued
    • Experience in data formats (NetCDF, GRIB, HFD5) and tools (CDO, NCO) used in Earth sciences will be valued
    • Fluency in other European languages will be also valued
