Context And Mission

The Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (CASE) department is looking for researchers in computers science, engineering or related fields to join the BSC Materials Science group. The project will be developed within the framework of the NOMAD Centre of Excellence (, which aims to bring together the expertise of the computational materials science community and the European High-Performance Computing centres to guide the development of future exascale systems. Considering the projects we are involved in, we have the possibility to match our project needs and candidate interests when deciding on the tasks to be carried out.

Key Duties

  • Identifying specific features of different types of HPC applications (e.g. algorithms, libraries, codes, workflows).
  • Isolating and classifying key compute-intensive sections (compute kernels).
  • Building computational materials science benchmark suite based on prototypes, a.k.a. mini-apps.
  • Evaluating existing and emerging architectures and share these results with system integrators, computing centres, co-design projects, and HPC companies.
  • Research on GPU porting of computational materials science codes.
  • Interact with the different partners of the network to carry out our collaborative research.
  • Contribute to publications of scientific papers and periodic reports.


  • Education
    • MSc or PhD in computers science, engineering, computational physics, theoretical chemistry, materials science or related fields.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in code development, parallelization and scientific computing,.
      Knowledge on debugging (C, C++, Fortran, MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC and/or CUDA) desirable.
      Experience in technical writing and communicating results.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in performance analysis of large supercomputing codes desirable.
      Knowledge of linear-algebra software libraries desirable.
      Experience with ab initio electronic structure methods is not compulsory but it will be positively considered.
      Experience in working within interdisciplinary teams and liaising with different stakeholders in code development teams desirable.

  • The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department
