Context And Mission

Within the Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES), led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, the climate prediction group, led Dr. Pablo Ortega and Dr. Markus Donat, aims at developing climate prediction capability for time scales ranging from a few weeks to a few decades and from regional to global scales. The group is also part of the development team and a key user of the EC-Earth global climate model ( and as such collaborates closely with all the members of the EC-Earth consortium. The Climate prediction group is looking for an established researcher to expand our research activities on land-carbon processes and predictability.

Key Duties

  • To lead all developments and the maintenance of the Carbon Cycle Components of EC-Earth.
  • To supervise all Land/Vegetation research and model development activities in the CPG, including the contributions to project deliverables
  • To participate in the preparation of project proposals to support and expand the Land/Vegetation activities in the group. And to look for potential funding opportunities
  • To get involved in the development of EC-Earth4, both at the BSC and the consortium level
  • To participate in the Technical and Land/Vegetation working Groups of EC-Earth
  • To coordinate the generation of atmospheric/land Initial conditions for the seasonal/decadal climate predictions performed at the CPG


  • Education
    • PhD in physics or similar.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Strong experience with the EC-Earth model components.
    • Expertise in land/vegetation processes, including wildfires.
    • Excellent development skills in Python.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience of version control in a distributed team, including SVN or Git will be valued.
    • Previous experience in HPC architectures and parallel programming (multi-threaded applications) will be valued.
    • Previous experience in climate or ocean modeling will be valued.
  • Competences
    • Capacity to interact and build strong relations with both climate and computer scientists.
    • Fluency in English.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to take initiatives prioritize tasks and work under set deadlines.


  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
