Context And Mission

The aim of the Earth System Services Group (ESS) within the Earth Sciences Department is to demonstrate the ongoing value of climate prediction services, atmospheric composition and weather forecasting to society and the economy. The group actively works in identifying user needs that partly guide research in the Department. The goal is to quantify the impact of weather, climate, aerosols and gaseous pollutants upon socio-economic sectors through the development of user-oriented services. This ensures the transfer of the technology developed and the adaptation to a rapidly changing environment.

The ESS group is looking for a Science communication specialist from any nationality to be part of the Knowledge Transfer activities in diverse EU-funded projects. The candidate will be in close contact with climate scientists and both potential and advanced users of climate information. The objective is to interact and build trust within these target users, understand their climate information needs and expectations from climate services.

The successful candidate is expected to learn about the research topics of the projects, plan and carry out communication and user engagement activities at the international level and suggest and promote clustering activities between different projects. Experience in multidisciplinary and international teams is key for the position.

Key Duties

  • Plan, coordinate and carry out communication, dissemination and user-engagement activities in EU-funded projects (e.g. CCiCC, S2S4E, MED-GOLD, APPLICATE).
  • Define Key Performance Indicators for all the dissemination and user engagement activities and report them periodically for each project.
  • Coordinate with other projects and initiatives to organize dissemination and user-engagement activities in international conferences and other events.
  • Travel and be in conferences, events and workshops.
  • Work in the content and format of key user-oriented dissemination material (leaflets, fact sheets, etc.).
  • Coordinate with external providers to prepare videos, leaflets and other on-line and printed material.
  • Link with the communication team at the BSC to promote the dissemination of the key outcomes of the projects.

Requirements

  • Education
    • Any technical degree (Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Environmental science, etc.) or journalism.
    • Master in science communication or specific communication training required.
    • A Ph.D. in science will be valued.
    • Other backgrounds are accepted if the candidate can demonstrate previous experience in science communication.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • At least 3 years of experience in science communication positions.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Background knowledge on climate, air quality or meteorology will be highly valued.
    • Professional experience in European institutions or International organisations will be valued.
    • Experience in Dissemination of EU-funded projects will be valued.
  • Competences
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
    • Ability to work in a professional environment within a multidisciplinary and international team.
    • Good public speaking skills.

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
