Context And Mission

The data-centric computing group from the computer science department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center searches for 1 Master Student on data-science, data-bases or high-performance computing, willing to work on benchmarking and analyzing Big-Data platforms in a joint project with a top ICT company.

The main objective is to model and benchmark emerging Big-Data technologies (analytics, large-scale databases, data warehouses and data lakes), as part of a joint project with Databricks. The employee is expected to benchmark different technologies in the Cloud, to evaluate and compare their performance and find points of improvement, side by side with other researchers in the field of high-performance computing and data-bases. The mentioned tasks involve performing experiments and tests over such technologies, analyze metrics and KPIs to model and analyze performance, and collaborate with the deployment of new benchmarks.

Key Duties

  • Functional design of automated tests for benchmarking tools
  • Experimentation with HPC and DB platforms and applications (e.g. Spark, SQL, ...)
  • Contribution to the development of new benchmarks
  • Give mutual support to other researchers in the project

Requirements

  • Education
    • Degree on computer science or related fields (ICT, data sciences, ...)
    • Currently coursing a Master in Data Science or Big-Data related fields
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Basic skills on Data-Bases usage and management
    • Domain of SQL and Java/Python/R languages
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Basic skills in containers (Docker) and Bash scripting
    • Basic skills on Reproducible Research (Notebooks, GIT, etc...)
    • Basic skills on using distributed environments like Spark
    • Understanding of high performance computing and distributed system concepts
  • Competences
    • Good English communication skills
    • Ability to work independently and in the context of a team/project
    • Flexible work schedule

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department

  • Duration: Temporary - 6 months renewable
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
