About BSC
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a hosting member of the PRACE European distributed supercomputing infrastructure. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 600 staff from 49 countries.

Context And Mission
The candidate will help to evaluate and optimize one of the most important Earth System Model in Europe, EC-Earth, for HPC platforms such as our Marenostrum4 supercomputer. This will allow to obtain of ultra-high resolution global simulations which will be used for several socio-economic activities as well in Spain as in the rest of Europe, providing society with information on the future climate and generating reliable in‐house predictions and projections of global climate change.
Key Duties
  • 1. The increase of the knowledge of relevant information to improve the parallel execution of the numerical models, which were developed several years ago, following a determined methodology which allow to highlight the real problems of the model to scale in an easy way. This will allow to the student to learn BSC Tools for profiling analysis similar to others such as V-Tune or Vampyr, to analyze models using parallel paradigms such OpenMP, MPI or CUDA.
  • 2. The development of some optimizations which will allow to 1) take advantage of platforms with much more computing power, 2) achieve a reasonable energy efficiency and 3) take the results in a reasonable time, producing results impossible until now.
  • 3. The improvement of the computational performance of the computational execution of the three main components of EC-Earth (IFS, NEMO, XIOS and OASIS).
  • 4. The promotion of the real need of interdisciplinary expertise, helping in the formation of new engineers/researchers who will be able to adapt the requirements of both computational and climate worlds for ESMs.
  • 5. Dissemination of the work done through documentation and presentations.
  • Education
    • Studying or with a Master in High Performance Computing.
    • Bachelor in Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in applications on UNIX-based systems experience in Fortran, C, MPI, OpenMP, and parallel methods.
    • Experience in Numerical models applied to Earth System Modelling and how to launch them using workflow managers.
    • Experience using performance analysis tools such as BSC Tools, and parallel debuggers.
    • Good understanding of Linux environment and Shell scripting.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in managing big and collaborative projects and experience with git and SVN.
    • Experience with CUDA or OpenACC, OpenMP and MPI is a plus.
  • Competences
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to be able to work within a team to complete tasks on schedule.
    • Capacity to interact and build strong relations with both climate and computer scientists.
    • Fluency in English.
