Context And Mission

The Parallel Programming Models (PM) group as part of the Computer Science Department, is one of the biggest groups composed of more than 30 PhD students, support engineers, postdocs and senior researchers. PM has a strong background on parallel and distributed programming models, domain specific languages (DSLs), compilers and accelerators. The PM group is involved in many EU projects such as LEGaTO, EuroEXA, EPEEC, DEEP-EST, and EPI, as well as, industrial projects with Repsol, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Fujitsu. The successful applicant will be based at BSC, but will also interact with our academic and industrial partners.
The European Processor Initiative (EPI) aims at the design of a roadmap for a future European processor technology for HPC and automotive. The EPI team within BSC is responsible for defining an architecture of a RISC-V accelerator to be used in conjunction with a general purpose processor for Exascale. The EPI chip has also an FPGA that will be used to accelerate parts of the system.
The development efforts of the EPI team within BSC are towards:
• Design and verification of IPs to be integrated into a state-of-the-art SoC design;
• Development of the necessary system software (compiler and runtime);
• Rapid prototyping of IPs for design validation and system software tests on FPGA.
We are seeking for a research engineer to do research on acceleration of the runtime system through the offloading of the tasks and task dependences management onto the EPI chip eFPGA, based on the BSC’s Picos manager.

Key Duties

  • Implement the basic version of the Picos manager onto the EPI chip eFPGA, to support tasking across the ARM cores.
  • Include the RISC-V accelerator on the management done by Picos, supporting RISC-V tasks.
  • Select a number of applications to evaluate on this environment, port them and evaluate performance and energy consumption, compared with the applications running without the Picos support.
  • Interact with the RTL design team and the software development team.
  • Participate on group/project publications, dissemination and training.

Requirements

  • Education
    • Master in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Good skills in programming in C, C++, OpenMP, MPI, VHDL/Verilog and HLS.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Knowledge about compilers and task based runtime systems.
    • Experience with Verilog, SystemVerilog, VHDL, and high-level synthesis tools.
  • Competences
    • Good written and verbal communication skills (English/Spanish).
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure.
    • Ability to work independently and in a team.

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department
