Context and Mission

Within the Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, the Computational Earth Sciences group is looking for a junior engineer to join the Data and Diagnostics Team to support the tasks of downloading, formatting and validate observational earth data used by the other members of the department.


Key Duties

  • The candidate will join the team developing and maintaining tools to download, check and format earth data retrieved from different institutions. Data and metadata should be carefully processed following community standards and file types
  • Contribute to develop new format operators related to meteorological, atmospheric composition and climate science
  • Interact with other engineers to discuss about the requirements of the data and with other scientist process data requests in the desired format (Candidates with data processing knowledge willing to apply new technologies of paradigms will be highly valued)
  • Interact with other institutions to discuss and solve issues related to downloaded products



  • Education
    • Having a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics. Having a Master’s or PhD degrees will be valued


  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Excellent development skills scripting languages (bash, python, perl, …) and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments
    • Experience of version control in a distributed team, including SVN or Git
    • Previous experience in the following topics will be valued:
      • R or Python packages applied in Earth System model analysis (netcdf4, abind, mapproj, parallel, …)
      • Earth sciences file types (netCDF, GRIB, HDF5…)
      • Management of high volumes of data
      • Task automation, downloading tools and data processing frameworks (Spark, Hadoop, …)
      • Scientific area related to the research position, in particular climate or ocean modeling


  • Competences
    • Fluency in spoken and written English, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued
    • Capacity to interact and build strong relations with both earth and computer scientists
    • Fluency in English
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to take initiatives, prioritize the tasks and work under set deadlines
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team



  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department Department

  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Duration of the contract: Will be for at least one year with a test period of 6 months, which could be extended depending on the availability of funds and performance.
