Context And Mission

This position is hosted by the Climate Prediction Group within BSC's Earth Science Department. The Climate Prediction Group undertakes fundamental research to (1) understand climate variability and change, including for climate extremes, (2) investigate global biogeochemical dynamics, effectiveness and impacts of carbon removal technologies to mitigate climate change, (3) developing new Earth System modeling capabilities, and (4) improving our ability to forecast the climate variations from one month to multiple decades into the future, both at global an regional scales.

The successful candidate will play a central role in data dissemination and the development of process-based diagnostics to assist in the different scientific analyses and activities performed by the group. This will include post-processing the data of the simulations and observations to be analysed, to ensure that they meet the requirements to (1) shared through different data dissemination portals and (2) be read by the different tools and languages used in the group for data analysis. The candidate is expected to develop strong skills in the use of these data analysis tools and languages, in order to assist the other members of the group in the development and use of diagnostics.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with different specialists (i.e. ocean and atmospheric dynamics, land vegetation and ocean biogeochemistry) both within the group and outside, through our international network of research collaborations. The successful candidate will also benefit from scientific and technical training and an international multidisciplinary working environment, a solid computing infrastructure, world-class software and climate data libraries, and advanced training on technical and scientific topics and career development.

Key Duties

  • Assist in the post-processing of model outputs and observational datasets to comply with CMOR/CMIP standards and the needs of the department
  • Prepare data for its publication and dissemination through different channels (ESGF, EUDAT, etc.)
  • Provide key support to users when they develop and run diagnostics
  • Develop new diagnostics, and transcribe other existing ones to the languages, packages and tools supported in the Earth Science department
  • Assist in the publication of the diagnostics as open source code

Requirements

  • Education
    • Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics or related discipline. Advanced degrees and experience in meteorology/oceanography will be considered an asset.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Excellent computing skills in high-level computer languages (especially python and R) and data processing/visualitation tools
    • Experience working with numerical models of ocean, atmosphere and other Earth System components
    • Experience with UNIX/LINUX environments, scripting languages (e.g. bash) and debugging tools
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience with revision control systems (e.g., SVN or Git) will be valued
    • Experience with ESMValtool and other python-based analysis tools will be valued
  • Competences
    • Very good interpersonal skills
    • Fluency in English
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
