Context And Mission

The mission of the Computer Science Department at the BSC is to influence the way machines are built, programmed and used: computer and system architecture, programming models and performance tools, resource management, Big Data and artificial intelligence. The HPAI (High Performance Artificial Intelligence) research group is part of the Computer Science department, and it performs research in Artificial Intelligence, focused on the solutions, problems and infrastructure provided by High Performance Computing. The group actively collaborates with researchers from other fields, with the goal of applying machine learning to challenging problems in a wide variety of domains. HPAI has active collaborations with several large tech companies, pursuing lines of research of common interest. The group is also involved in multiple research projects, both European and national. Although the HPAI is open to all aspects of AI, currently its main lines of research are deep neural networks, graph analytics and multi-agent systems.

The post holder will work in the HPAI group in the Computer Science Department and will participate in the process of finding, designing and developing AI solutions to challenges related to the research projects the group is working on.

The Researcher will work in a highly sophisticated HPC environment, will have access to state-of-the-art systems and computational infrastructures, and will establish collaborations with experts in different areas both at the local and international levels.

Key Duties

  • Work, in collaboration with the members of the group, on the design and development of the solutions needed to achieve the goals of the group’s research projects
  • Interact with relevant stakeholders of the group’s research projects in order to understand their problems and the available data in order to formulate useful solutions
  • Collaborate with the members of the group in the project management activities, including the creation, refinement and estimation of user stories


  • Education
    • MSc in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence or Applied Mathematics
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Good knowledge of Python
    • Knowledge of Test-Driven Design and/or Development
    • Knowledge of Continuous Integration/Delivery/Deployment, including tools such as (or similar to) Terraform, GitLab CI, Docker and/or Ansible
    • Knowledge of mathematics and statistics applied to Machine Learning
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Basic knowledge of: C++, Javascript/node.js, C#, Matlab and/or Java
    • Experience in machine learning and data mining, including knowledge of Keras, PyTorch, Tensorflow, Pandas, Scikit-learn and/or Numpy.
    • Knowledge of agile methodologies for project management, esp. Kanban
    • Experience in optimisation and parallelisation, ideally in HPC clusters
    • Experience in research and in dissemination activities, including paper writing
    • Theoretical broad knowledge of AI techniques such as Natural Language Processing (NTLK), Computer Vision, Reinforcement Learning and/or Multi-Agent Systems
  • Competences
    • Fluency in spoken and written English
    • Capacity to explore new research lines
    • Good communication and presentation skills
    • Ability to work within a team and within a pair (pair programming)


  • The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department
