Context And Mission

The Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (CASE) department is looking for Researchers with a PhD degree in computational physics or related fields to join the BSC Fusion group (fusion.bsc.es). Candidates with research engineering background with equivalent experience are also eligible.

The positions are available within the emerging sector project FusionCAT (2019-2022) coordinated and led by the BSC Fusion group. FusionCAT is part of the Research and Innovation Strategy for the Smart Specialisation of Catalonia (RIS3CAT). The candidates should have demonstrated experience at least in one of the following fields: numerical modelling and simulations of neutron transport, high-temperature superconductivity and electromagnetism, atomistic simulations using Density Functional Theory (DFT), integrated modelling for fusion, multiphysics simulations, and/or computational fluid dynamics. The successful candidates will assume the responsibility of the R&D activities within the assigned domain in the project under the supervision of the project coordinator.

The overall objective of the BSC Fusion group is to enhance modelling capabilities in fusion by code development, validation, integration and optimization including the use of advanced HPC techniques. We work closely towards the objectives of EUROfusion (www.euro-fusion.org), the European fusion research programme for Horizon 2020, in collaboration with Fusion for Energy (F4E), ITER, International Tokamak Physics Activity, and the Spanish national fusion laboratory CIEMAT.

  • Lead R&D activities in the assigned domain within the RIS3CAT FusionCAT project

Requirements

  • Education
    • PhD in Computational Physics; candidates with research engineering background with equivalent experience are also eligible.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • At least 3 years of demonstrated experience in one of the following fields: numerical modelling and simulations of neutron transport, high-temperature superconductivity and electromagnetism, atomistic simulations using Density Functional Theory (DFT), integrated modelling for fusion, multiphysics simulations, and/or computational fluid dynamics
    • Strong skills in Fortran and in Linux environment.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in numerical methods, code development and numerical modelling
    • Ability to communicate about their areas of expertise
    • Ability to promote, within professional contexts, technological advancement
  • Competences
    • Flexible team player capable of working with others and also independently
    • Problem-solving, pro-active, result-oriented work attitude
    • Fluent English, both written and spoken
    • Good interpersonal skills, including in multi-cultural environments
    • Experience in liaising with different stakeholders in code development teams
