Context And Mission
The Earth Sciences Department, led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, aims to deliver novel, advanced, and well-evaluated high-resolution global climate models capable of simulating and predicting climate estimations with unprecedented reliability. The ideal candidate will be part of the High Performance Computing for Earth Sciences group.

This group performs R&D tasks in the field of Earth System Modelling (ESM) performance: its goal is to identify models bottlenecks and research how to remove them without impacting the final results. The team has at its disposal cutting-edge performance tools, able to evaluate and represent different performance metrics.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for porting Earth Science applications to GPUs. They will also be responsible for designing and implementing testable and scalable code.
Key Duties
  • Analyze, port and optimize Earth Science applications to efficiently run on supercomputers based on CPUs and GPUs
  • Design highly scalable, testable code
  • Use of novel GPU technologies
  • Close interaction with external collaborators/software vendors as NVIDIA or AMD
  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related field
    • Master’s degree will be valued
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Excellent knowledge of CUDA or OpenACC
    • Excellent computing skills in high-level programming languages (especially Fortran or C/C++)
    • Programming skills to manage big and collaborative projects and experience with git
    • Demonstrated experience in GPU porting from CPU codes
    • Demonstrated experience developing and running distributed scientific computing applications with a good understanding of scalability concerns particularly in HPC or cloud environments is an advantage
    • Experience or knowledge in HPC architecture and parallel programming (multi-threaded applications) is an advantage
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Fluent in English

    • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude to address new challenges and perfect the current solutions so they gain in reliability and efficiency.
    • Demonstrated learning capacity and motivation to maintain a learning progression during the contract.
    • Good written and verbal skills and the capacity to support Earth and Computational scientists.

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
