Context And Mission
 
The Department of Earth Sciences of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), BSC-ES henceforth (bsc.es/earth-sciences, https://earth.bsc.es/wiki) is one of the most active departments in Europe in atmospheric composition modelling, climate prediction, climate services and the IT aspects to make that research possible and efficient. The department is currently composed of about 75 people, including scientists and technical and support staff, and is structured in four distinct but interacting research groups: Atmospheric Composition (AC), Climate Prediction (CP), Earth System Services (ESS), and Computational Earth Sciences (CES). The BSC-ES leads or is involved in a number of collaborative projects and service contracts with a large number of partners, both nationally and internationally.

The BSC-ES is looking for a Research Scientist in Climate Data Quality Control to coordinate the activity in a new international project.

 

Key Duties
  • Coordinate a large contract for the evaluation and quality control of climate datasets from satellite and in-situ observations, reanalyses, and climate predictions and projections, as well as the products generated from them.
  • Work towards implementing workflows and methodologies that ensure that the highest quality and better documented climate data records are held in the most important climate data repository in Europe.
  • Perform research on methods for the validation of climate datasets used to elaborate a set of representative products.

 

Requirements

  • Education
    • PhD (or equivalent in terms of experience) in physical sciences, applied mathematics or environmental engineering
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • At least 3 years of experience in quantitative analysis of atmospheric and/or ocean observations and model data
    • Knowledge of data documentation, validation and quality control
    • Experience in handling and interpreting scientific data
    • Scientific programming skills
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Proven track record in research, demonstrated through a relevant peer-reviewed publication list and/or the participation in research and operational projects
    • Capability to coordinate multi-disciplinary, international teams
  • Competences
    • Capability of independent thinking, setting priorities and monitoring other people's work
    • Willingness to work closely with the project administration and leadership
    • Written and oral communication skills in English; knowledge of other European languages will be valued
    • Willingness to coordinate a distributed team of data quality analysts and software engineers

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
