Context And Mission

The Earth System Services Group (ESS) at the Earth Sciences Department conducts interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research to enhance the societal value of climate prediction services, atmospheric composition and weather forecasting. The group actively engages with society, decision-makers and businesses to exchange knowledge and develop user-oriented services. The aim of the ESS is to enhance knowledge and technology transfer and improve resilience, by accelerating adaptation to a rapidly changing environment.

The ESS group is looking for a communication and dissemination expert from any nationality with interest in user engagement. The candidate will be part of the knowledge integration team and will conduct communication and dissemination activities in the framework of different EU-funded projects. The candidate will closely collaborate with climate scientists, impact scientists and social scientists, as well as with potential and advanced users of climate information. The objective is to increase the visibility of the Earth Sciences department and the conducted research and develop multi-media and multi-format materials to disseminate scientific outcomes to various audiences, supporting the engagement with stakeholders.

The successful candidate is expected to learn about and participate in ongoing scientific activities of the ESS group and to carry out communication, outreach and dissemination tasks. Experience working in interdisciplinary and international teams, proved experience in the creation of scientific contents, design-related tasks and previous knowledge on the topic of climate change adaptation are key for the position.

The successful candidate will be part of a diverse and international team of scientists, communication specialists and technical experts. Key Duties

  • Plan, coordinate and carry out communication, dissemination and user engagement activities in EU-funded projects (e.g. HARMONIZE, IDAlert, VitiGEOSS, Climateurope2)
  • Develop the content and format of user-oriented dissemination materials and/or coordinate with external providers for their preparation (e.g. factsheets, booklets, videos, websites, etc.)
  • Coordinate with other projects and initiatives to organize technical dissemination and user engagement activities in international conferences and workshops and liaise with academic partners with communications background
  • Work on the documentation, reporting, and evaluation of undertaken actions and prepare deliverables and any other documents needed for successful project development
  • Prepare scientific papers about science communication, climate information impact on decision-making processes, knowledge integration and other topics related to the ESS research lines
  • Present the outcomes of dissemination and user engagement activities in project meetings and in international conferences in the fields of science communication and knowledge coproduction for climate (and air quality) science and services
  • Travel to relevant conferences, events, workshops and project meetings

Requirements

  • Education
    • PhD in natural sciences, social sciences, or science communication
    • Education (first degree, master’s, or PhD) in natural sciences
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • More than two years’ experience in managing science communication and dissemination activities in EU-funded projects
    • Previous work on the topic of climate change adaptation
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Master’s in science communication or other specific communication training will be highly valued
    • Experience in stakeholder and policy-maker engagement will be highly valued
    • Previous experience with writing research project proposals is appreciated
  • Competences
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including technical writing and collaboration in scientific papers
    • Ability to work in a professional environment within an interdisciplinary and international team
    • Good public speaking skills
    • Proactivity, creativity and high sense of responsibility

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
