Context And Mission

The Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES) led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes develops, among other research tools, global climate models to perform a range of climate experiments at frontier (storm and eddy-resolving) spatial resolutions. The Department is looking for either researcher to help with the development of a high-resolution global configuration of the IFS/NEMO climate model.

Key Duties

  • Contribute to the development, maintain and optimize the global climate model for different high-resolution configurations.
  • Perform simulations for model tuning and evaluation.
  • Assist in the post-processing of the model output to, among other things, evaluate the model quality and feed back to the model development process.
  • Collaborate with groups within the department to support scientific application work and computational development.
  • Guide colleagues in performing experiments with efficiency.

Requirements

  • Education
    • Bachelor degree in computer sciences, applied mathematics or physics, or any related discipline. A PhD and work experience in meteorology/oceanography will be considered an asset.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Excellent computing skills in high-level computer languages (especially FORTRAN and C/C++) and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments, scripting languages (bash, Python …) and debugging tools.
    • Experience working with numerical models of ocean, atmosphere and other Earth system components.
    • Experience in using HPC architectures and parallel programming (multi-threaded applications) will be valued.
    • Experience with revision control systems (e.g., SVN or Git) will be valued.
  • Competences
    • Very good interpersonal skills
    • Fluency in English
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritise and work under set deadlines
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
