Context And Mission

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) coordinates the Quantum Spain project, which is working on the construction and installation of the first quantum computer based on European technology.
The project foresees the construction of a quantum computer that will be installed at BSC headquarters and that will be progressively equipped with chips of different generations and numbers of qubits. The computer will have a first operational two-qubit chip by the end of 2022 and will progressively incorporate new versions of chips, until reaching 20 qubits in 2025.
This new vacancy within the operations department will be focused on providing the required support to the users in the usage of this new machine and help to create the required ecosystem with the other partners of the project to promote the Quantum computing usage within the Spanish researchers. The vacancy will include the required training in Quantum computing, so no previous expertise is required, but it is desirable.

Key Duties

  • Provide the required user support for the usage of the quantum computer and its simulators
  • Optimize and adapt scientific algorithms to quantum computers.
  • Provide consultancy to scientists on quantum computing processors, simulators and other related topics.
  • Help to create a Spanish quantum computing ecosystem between the different stakeholders (researchers, hosting institutions, …)
  • prepare and provide the required training to help the different types of users to use the simulators and the quantum computer.
  • Collaborate with other functional groups at European and International levels on technical matters related to supporting scientific applications for quantum computers


  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree in computer science or in any other scientific field related to Quantum computing (physics, telecommunications,...)
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in computer programming languages (python required, others desirable)
    • Experience supporting and collaborating with external partners.
    • Good understanding of Linux environment and Shell scripting.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Knowledge about how to work with Quantum computers
    • Previous expertise in Quantum computer simulators
  • Competences
    • Willing to learn new topics
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to be able to work within a team to complete tasks on schedule
    • Analytical problem-solving ability


  • The position will be located at BSC within the Operations Department

  • Duration: Temporary - 2 years renewable
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
