Context And Mission
We are looking for an outstanding researcher to join the Atmospheric Composition (AC) group within the Earth Sciences department at the BSC-CNS. The AC group aims at better understanding and predicting the spatiotemporal variations of atmospheric pollutants along with their effects upon air quality, weather and climate. This is addressed through the continuous development and application of numerical models over multiple scales, from weather to climate and from global to urban scales.
The position will be directly linked to the ERC Consolidator Grant FRAGMENT (Frontiers in Dust Mineralogical Composition and its Effects upon Climate) led by Carlos Pérez García-Pando whose goal is understand and constrain the global mineralogical composition of dust along with its effects upon climate. The representation of the global dust mineralogical composition is hindered by our limited knowledge of the global soil mineral content and our incomplete understanding of the emitted dust sizes in terms of its constituent minerals that results from the fragmentation of soil aggregates during wind erosion. FRAGMENT combines advances in theory, field measurements, laboratory analyses, remote spectroscopy and modelling to quantify the global mineralogical composition of dust and its effects upon climate. FRAGMENT is aligned with and complementary to EMIT, a NASA project that will mount an advanced imaging spectrometer to the exterior of the International Space Station to determine the mineral composition of dust sources that produce dust aerosols by 2022.
The successful applicant will support the modeling workpackage of FRAGMENT, which includes model development, analysis and evaluation activities. The candidate will contribute to 1) model developments related to the specification of aerosol optical properties, soil mineralogy and emitted size-resolved mineralogy, 2) the integration and testing of developments from other collaborators, 3) the compilation of relevant observations for model evaluation, 3) sensitivity experiments and evaluation with observations and 4) understand the effect of regionally varying mineralogical composition upon radiative forcing.
Key Duties
  • Develop model components related to dust, dust mineralogy and related aspects
  • Run model experiments on the BSC supercomputers
  • Compile observations for model evaluation
  • Evaluate model experiments with observations
  • Develop original research and analysis strategies
  • Participate in collaborative projects with partner institutions
  • Present results at international meetings
  • Publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals
  • Contribute ideas for new research projects
  • Contribute to the intellectual life of the AC group, including meetings and collaborations
  • Other duties include contributing to the development common analysis tools; assisting in grant applications; and other duties as assigned
  • Education
    • PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry, Environmental engineering, Meteorology, Physics, or related discipline
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Advanced understanding of atmospheric aerosol
    • Experience in atmospheric, climate, chemistry or aerosol model developments (0-2 years)
    • Excellent computing skills in high-level computer languages (FORTRAN is required) (3-5 years)
    • Experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and with scripting languages (such as bash) (3-5 years)
    • Experience atmospheric science data formats (NetCDF) and with scientific software and tools (CDO, NCO, Python or R) (0-2 years)
    • Fluency in English
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Previous experience on mineral dust research and/or model developments will be highly valued
  • Competences
    • Very good interpersonal skills
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team
  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
