About BSC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a hosting member of the PRACE European distributed supercomputing infrastructure. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 600 staff from 49 countries.

Context And Mission

The Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES), led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes, the climate prediction group, aims at, among other objectives, developing a capability to develop and provide climate information for a variety of time scales ranging from a few weeks to a few decades and from regional to global scales. The department is also part of the development team and a key user of the EC-Earth global climate model ( and as such collaborates closely with all the members of the EC-Earth consortium.

The position offered aims at studying a suite of global and regional climate simulations, including high-resolution climate simulations performed as part of the European H2020 project PRIMAVERA, comparing them with the best observations available, estimating metrics that assess the model fitness for purpose and developing regional climate information that makes the best use of both global and regional climate models.

The successful applicant will develop regional climate information and collaborate with scientists in the department who develop climate services and engage with climate-vulnerable sectors to illustrate the added value of this climate information.

Key Duties

  • Perform process-based analyses of the global CMIP5, CMIP6 and PRIMAVERA simulations and the suite of CORDEX experiments over Europe, Africa and South America
  • Contribute to the global climate simulations performed with the EC-Earth model
  • Work in collaboration with the department software engineers to implement and run the common tools to estimate diagnostics and metrics on the simulations available (e.g. ESMValTool)
  • Implement methodologies for model classification and combination leading to robust climate information with reliable uncertainty estimates
  • Explore the relative merits of storyline methodologies to distill climate messages and develop action-oriented climate information
  • Engage with the climate service development activities

  • Education
    • Masters or PhD in atmospheric science, applied mathematics, engineering, fluid dynamics or in a related discipline
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Demonstrated ability to handle experimental set ups that address specific climate modeling problems
    • Knowledge of handling large datasets, and a minimum knowledge of NetCDF encoding
    • Programming skills: scripting (e.g. bash, python), data analysis and visualization software (e.g. CDO, NCO, R, Python, NCL)
    • Knowledge of machine learning methods will be valued
    • Proficiency in written and spoken English at scientific level
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in ocean/atmosphere modelling (or environmental modelling) and in handling climate model output
    • Experience in HPC and parallel computing (multi-threaded applications) applied to data analysis
    • Proven ability to prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-review journals
    • Knowledge of version control systems (git, svn, cvs…)
    • Interest and capacity in participating in the writing and, when possible, leading the preparation of research and computing proposals
    • Interest in tutoring and/or advising master and PhD students
  • Competences
    • Highly collaborative spirit and ability to work as part of a large, strongly-coordinated team and to continuously share both knowledge and tools
    • Capacity to respect time constraints

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a full-time contract, a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible hours, extensive training plan, tickets restaurant, private health insurance, fully support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Temporary - 2 years renewable
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: July 2019

Applications Procedure

All applications must include:

  • A motivation letter with a statement of interest in English, including two contacts for further references - Applications without this document will not be considered

  • A full CV including contact details in English

The vacancy will remain open until suitable candidate has been hired. Applications will be regularly reviewed and potential candidates will be contacted.
