Context And Mission

The Computational Genomics group, led by ICREA professor Toni Gabaldón, is looking for a highly motivated PhD student to work in Comparative Genomics of microbial eukaryotes. The project will be centered on the use of comparative genomics, bioinformatics, and evolutionary approaches order to answer biologically relevant questions in the context of emergence of virulence in fungal pathogens. These questions will be solved using genomic sequences from clinical, environmental, and artificially evolved strains from various pathogenic Candida species. The successful candidate will complete a PhD in biomedicine, addressing multiple topics such as emergence of virulence traits, hybridization, host-pathogen interaction, among others. The candidate will join a dynamic research group within the Life Sciences department. The researcher will work in a sophisticated HPC environment and will have access to systems and computational infrastructures. Priority will be given to highly motivated and proactive candidates with a biology-related background and with the ambition to develop their career in the field of computational genomics and biomedicine.

Key Duties

  • Work on a bioinformatics project related to comparative analysis of fungal pathogens
  • Collaborate with various research groups across Europe and the United States


  • Education
    • Degree in Biology, biotechnology or any field related to biomedicine
    • MSc in Biology, Bioinformatics or any field related to genomics
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in python programming
    • Experience in genome analysis: genome assembly and population genomics
  • Competences
    • Fluency in spoken and written English
    • Good communication and presentation skills
    • Ability to work both independently and within a team


  • The position will be located at BSC within the Life Sciences Department

  • Duration: Temporary - 30/09/2020 renewable
