Context And Mission
 
The Department of Earth Sciences of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), BSC-ES henceforth (https://www.bsc.es/discover-bsc/organisation/scientific-structure/earth-sciences) is one of the most active groups in air quality and atmospheric composition modelling, climate prediction and climate change simulation, climate services, and environmental computational research and engineering in Europe.

BSC-ES is looking for a PhD student to explore new methodologies to attribute extreme climate events to global warming and other climate drivers. The incumbent is expected to use a wide range of climate observations and simulations to make attribution statements for the Euro-Mediterranean region. She/he will also use the EC-Earth climate model to assess the relative merits of approaches inspired in simplified data assimilation in climate attribution. Both climate-change attribution and attribution of extreme events will be studied considering factual and counter-factual worlds in the coupled climate model where the observed atmospheric circulation is prescribed.
 
Key Duties
 
  • Perform data analyses and experiments to address the PhD objectives
  • Formulate and evaluate new ideas in a rigorous way
  • Write peer-reviewed papers and prepare a PhD thesis
  • Use scientific code (data analysis software, climate models, etc.) and contribute to the common development
  • Present results at international meetings
 
Requirements
 
  • Education
    • MSc in Physics, Applied Mathematics or Environmental Engineering (candidates expected to graduate in the current course are also encouraged to apply)
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Some experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and with scripting languages
    • Some experience in climate data formats (e.g., NetCDF) and with scientific software and tools (CDO, Python or R)
    • Fluency in English
  • Competences
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritise and work under set deadlines
    • Ability to work independently as part of a team
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
 
Conditions
 
  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
  • We offer a full-time contract, a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, tickets restaurant, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: 3 years
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
