Context And Mission

This project takes place in the context of the collaboration framework between the Fachgebiet Experimentelle Strömungsmechanik at Technischen Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) and the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC) for the prediction of flame flashback of hydrogen-enriched fuels on a swirl-stabilized burner with a non-swirling axial jet. The use of hydrogen-enriched fuels is an alternative to reduce pollutant emissions in gas turbine (GT) applications allowing high flexibility of operation and fuel flexibility. However, the presence of hydrogen in fuel mixtures can lead to unpredictable behaviour of combustion systems and undesirable phenomena such as flashback or blow-off. The existence of flashback is one of the main drawbacks on burner-stabilized combustion systems operated with hydro-gen, as the H2 content contributes to higher flammability limits and higher burning speeds when compared to traditional hydrocarbon fuels. Therefore, the dynamics of flames burning hydrogen-enriched fuels is yet to be completely understood. The main objective of this project is to use highly resolved large-eddy simulations to fully understand the mechanisms behind the formation of flashback and cross-validate the experimental results in regions were the measurements are not reliable enough to obtain conclusions.

Key Duties

  • The offered position is a funded MSc Internship to study the mixing and combustion of a technically premixed hydrogen flame at conditions close to the flashback point. The work conducted in the project will be performed with the parallel multiphysics code Alya, which is an in-house finite-element solver developed at BSC. The applicant is expected to get familiar with the code running benchmarking cases, and developing physical models that will be integrated in the multiphysics platform of Alya.

Requirements

  • Education
    • The candidate should hold an Engineering Degree in Aerospace, Aeronautics or Mechanical Engineering with interest in turbulence and combustion.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • General knowledge on fluid mechanics, LES, numerical methods, combustion chemistry are expected.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Computational skills and parallel programming for HPC are not necessary, but will be considered an asset.
  • Competences
    • Ability to work independently and make decisions.
    • Fluency in English is essential, Spanish is welcome.

  • The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department
