Context And Mission

The Computer Sciences (CS) department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center aims at carrying out research and development to influence the way computing machines are built, programmed, and used. The Workflows and Distributed Computing group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center aims at carrying out research on programming models for distributed computing. More specifically, this group is contributing to the programming model PyCOMPSs/COMPSs and with the machine learning library dislib. PyCOMPSs/COMPSs (compss.bsc.es) is a task-based, parallel programming model offered to the project applications as a means to execute them in distributed environments. For this research, the group is looking for a Ph.D. student to perform research on the area of offloading of I/O tasks with the objective of being able to overlap I/O operations with computing tasks. In this sense, new dynamic scheduling algorithms that can decide the number of concurrent I/O tasks that optimize the performance will be studied. The proposed ideas will be integrated in the PyCOMPSs programming model and runtime and evaluated in real platforms.

Requirements

  • Education
    • Computer science degree or equivalent
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in task-based programming models
    • Knowledge of I/O
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Knowledge of dynamic scheduling
  • Competences
    • Fluency in spoken and written English, while fluency in other European languages will be also valued
    • Good at team work
    • Good at time management

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department

  • Duration: Temporary - One year renewable
