Context And Mission

The design of modern combustion systems in a wide range of transportation applications needs to address challenges in aspects related to global efficiency (and hence CO2), reduction of pollutant emissions, major flexibility of operation and reduction of local phenomena such as thermo-acoustic instabilities for aero-engines or super-knock for SI engines. The use of numerical simulations as a tool for design of current and future propulsion systems is growing in the last decade as more computing power is becoming available. The proposed project is focused on the development of physical models and advance numerical simulations of turbulent flames with a view on the application to practical powertrains such as gas turbine engines, spark ignition engines or even turbulent jet ignition engines. Hence, a cross-platform combustion model is the main goal of this activity. Model developments are based on detailed chemistry simulations and advanced combustion and spray models that can be optimized with data-driven methods.

Research group description
The PhD work will be performed within a cooperation framework between the Propulsion Technologies Group at CASE Department of BSC and the Combustion Group at CMT-Motores Térmicos Research Institute of UPV. The team at BSC is a multidisciplinary group with researchers from all disciplines and with strong background in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The team is involved in many EU and industrial projects related to this topic. The team at UPV has a strong background on detailed analysis of technologically relevant combustion applications, such as reciprocating combustion engines or gas turbines, both from an experimental and simulation perspectives. The applicant PhD period will be shared between BSC and CMT, but will also interact with project partners from Cleansky project https://estimate-project.eu.

Key Duties

  • The candidate will be focused on the study of turbulence / chemistry interactions (TCI) at engine-relevant conditions from direct numerical simulations (DNS) perspective and the application of Artificial Intelligence methods to provide model closures for TCI in large-eddy simulation (LES). The work is initially split into several development phases going from the study of the fundamentals of TCI in partially premixed flames, physics-based model developments assisted by data-driven methods and the application of these models to target technological applications using LES. The project will focus not only to gas-phase combustion, but also to spray flames.

Requirements

  • Education
    • Engineering Degree in Aerospace, Aeronautics or Mechanical Engineering
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Interest in turbulence and combustion
    • Computational skills, parallel programming in HPC and Machine Learning are not necessary, but will be considered an asset.
  • Competences
    • Ability to work independently and make decisions
    • Fluency in English is essential, Spanish is welcome.

  • The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department
