Context And Mission

Architecture Operating System Department (www.bsc.es/caos and http://people.ac.upc.edu/fcazorla/index.html) at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS). We are offering an Engineer position for a period of 2 years (with possibility of extension) in the context of several industrial and research projects in collaboration with some of the main tools, components and OEM industries in the automotive, avionics and space domains.
Applications are invited for Ph.D. and Master student positions in the research lines of the Computer Architecture Operating System Department (http://www.bsc.es/caos and http://people.ac.upc.edu/fcazorla/index.html) at Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS). We are offering Master student positions for a period of 2 years and PhD student positions for a period of 3 years (with possibility of extension) in the context of several industrial and research projects, the latter funded by the European Union, in collaboration with some of the main tools-providers, TIER and OEM industries in the automotive, avionics and space domains.
This work will be carried out within a large and diverse group with experience in the domain and skilled on those tasks, thus assisting the candidate in the ramp-up phase of his work at BSC.

Key Duties

  • The objective of this position is to do a PhD in the field of real-time (critical) multicore architectures under the scope of different EU and private-funded projects. The specific research topic will be decided based on candidate skills and objectives. The duties will depend on the particular topic for the Thesis that is selected.
  • For the software-related proposals, key duties include:
    - Participate in the setup of one or few boards relevant for the automotive, avionics and space domains, with processors from the main chip vendors (e.g. ARM, Infineon, Xilinx, NVIDIA), installing appropriate Operating Systems and testing debug and monitoring features with the help of an engineer.
    - Perform timing analysis and performance analysis of real-time applications on those boards.
    - Improve with new ideas the tools used in the group to carry out the analyses described in the previous point.
    - Port applications from the aforementioned domains to evaluate research findings.
  • For the hardware-related proposals, key duties include:
    - Understand the main simulation infrastructure in the CAOS group.
    - Perform timing analysis and performance analysis of real-time applications on that simulation infrastructure.
    - Contribute with new hardware proposals to improve timing behavior of critical real-time applications and implement them in the simulation infrastructure.
    - Port applications from the aforementioned domains to the simulator to evaluate research findings.

Requirements

  • Education
    • Bachelor or MSc in Computer Science, Telecommunications or Electronics (or expected to graduate in the current course).
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Computer Architecture in general.
    • Systems: Linux.
    • Programming experience in some of the following: C/C++, Assembler, Open MP/MPI, CUDA, scripting (shell, TCL, Python, etc.), etc.
  • Competences
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently and in a team.
    • Strong troubleshooting attitude.
    • Capacity to interact and build strong relations with other research groups.
    • Good verbal communication skills in English.

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department
