Context And Mission

The Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (CASE) department is looking for a candidate with a degree in Physics or Computer Science to carry out a PhD thesis in the BSC Fusion group ( The Fusion group develops applications to simulate plasma behavior in fusion reactors. The PhD position contributes to the activities of the group within the EUROfusion project ( and involves different state-of-the-art tools.

Key Duties

  • Computer-based modelling using state-of-art simulations tools.
  • Development and validation of simulations tools against experimental cases.


  • Education
    • Physics or Computer Sciences Degree or similar
    • Master degree in plasma physics, fusion, material physics, nuclear engineering, HPC or numerical modelling for science is advantageous
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in programming, especially in FORTRAN
    • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Competences
    • Highly collaborative spirit and ability to work as part of a large, strongly-coordinated team and to continuously share both knowledge and tools
    • Ability to effectively communicate results
    • Problem-solving, pro-active, result-oriented work attitude.
    • Knowledge of plasma physics, fusion, nuclear engineering, material physics and/or HPC is advantageous.
    • Previous experience in research projects is favorable.


  • The position will be located at BSC within the CASE Department

  • Duration: Temporary - 1 year (renewable) renewable
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
