The objective is to develop models that help to perform forecasts of fires, based on seasonal forecasts of rain and fall precipitation during the last seasons.

The Department of Earth Sciences has opened a new line of research dedicated to forest fires. The objective is to develop models that help to perform forecasts of fires, based on seasonal forecasts of rain and fall precipitation during the last seasons. Researcher Etienne Tourigny, PhD in Meteorology obtained at the Brazilian Institute of Space Research and who has recently joined the center, will lead this new line of research, which will be carried out within the Climate Predictions group.

The Climate Predictions group has already performed several studies on how to predict the efforts of climate change on forest fires, one of which has recently been published in Nature Scientific Reports "On the key role of droughts in the dynamics of summer fires in Mediterranean Europe".
