Biography

Davide Cirillo is the head of the Machine Learning for Biomedical Research Unit and Juan de la Cierva Incorporación fellow at BSC Computational Biology group. His area of expertise is data analysis and predictive modeling for Precision Medicine using Network Biology and Machine Learning. His research in Precision Medicine includes rare diseases and paediatric cancers, as well as ethics of Artificial Intelligence. He is co-editor of the book Sex and Gender Bias in Technology and Artificial Intelligence: Biomedicine and Healthcare Applications (Elsevier Academic Press 2022).

His work is carried out in the framework of two projects (iPC and AI-SPRINT) funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme, the BSC-IBM Joint Study Agreement (JSA), and the BSC-Huawei agreement. A project in which he was fully involved was awarded a BBVA Foundation grant (2016-2018) that proves Precision Medicine as the optimal environment for application of innovative technologies such as Cognitive Computing. He was awarded the José Castillejo Mobility Grant to undertake an internship at IBM (2019). He is a member of the ELIXIR Machine Learning Focus Group and the BSC Bioinfo4Women initiative, and scientific advisor to the Women’s Brain Project non-profit organization.

In 2011, he graduated in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (graded outstanding cum laude) at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, where he was awarded a merit-based, paid internship at Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology Department. In July 2017, his Ph.D. thesis (graded outstanding cum laude) on the prediction of protein and nucleic acid interactions has been awarded the Extraordinary Prize of the Doctoral School in Biomedicine (Universidad Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain).

He underwent high-level professional training (genome data analysis, predictive modeling, deep learning) and participated in national and international conferences and events presenting posters and oral communications. He served as peer-reviewer in a number of scientific papers. He supervised students for the programmes CatalunyaCaixa "Joves i Ciència", Centro de Formación Intedisciplinaria Superior (CFIS), and Master in Applied Bioinformatics to Personalized Medicine and Health of Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII). He is currently supervising one Ph.D. student researching at BSC Life Sciences Department.
