Biography

Martín Lotto Batista is a PhD candidate in the PhD Programme 'Epidemiology', Braunschweig-Hannover, and joined the Barcelona Supercomputing Center as a Junior Research Engineer in the Global Health Resilience (GHR) team in 2022. Martín's research focuses on understanding climatic drivers of zoonotic infectious disease risk and on developing policy-relevant prediction models.

Martín obtained his degree in Biology in Argentina working on the epidemiology of Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) among immunocompromised people. He then earned his MSc in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine studying the interactions between El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and leptospirosis in South America. Martín later joined the SUNY-Upstate Medical University's 'Global Health' Field Team in Machala, Ecuador, where he studied dynamics of Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Origin (CKDu) in the local population. In 2019, Martín joined the Epidemiology Department at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, Germany, as a PhD candidate in `Epidemiology'. Martín's doctoral research centers on using Bayesian spatiotemporal models to quantify the influence of climate and the environment on dynamics of leptospirosis in North-Eastern Argentina and Lyme disease in Germany. Martín's goal is to develope models suitable for early outbreak detection. In 2022, he joined the Lancet Countdown family, where he computes indicators that track infectious disease transmission in different regions of the world.

In the Goblal Health Resilience team, Martín contributes to the IDAlert and Lancet Countdown projects. Martín's role focalise on developing policy-relevant indicators of infectious disease transmission, which can be used for seasonal-to-subseasonal forecasting methods and climate change projections.
