Context And Mission
 
The Heterogeneous Architectures group within the Computer Science department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) is offering a full-time research engineer position. The main responsibility of the position will to extend and maintain multi-node tasking support in the Nanos6 runtime system, which is central to the group’s ongoing research line in programming models. The long-term goal will be to implement, evaluate and demonstrate new programming model features to ultimately be proposed for inclusion in a future revision of the OpenMP standard. As such, the successful candidate will be working at the forefront of research in programming models and runtime systems and will work very closely with two to three PhD students in a dynamic research group (currently nine PhD students, three engineers, and three senior researchers) with strong connections to industry (Arm, Fujitsu, Micron, Samsung).
This position requires excellent C++14 software development skills, a working knowledge of OpenMP and MPI, and experience with complex multi-threaded pthreads software development. An ideal candidate would also bring additional relevant expertise, for example in HPC applications, programming models, runtime systems or computer systems architecture. He or she should be an excellent communicator, both written and spoken, with the ability to work well in a team, think creatively, and take ownership and initiative, both independently and under set deadlines. The working language of the group is English.
 
Key Duties
 
  • Ongoing development and maintenance of multi-node tasking support in the Nanos6 runtime system.
  • Implementation and evaluation of new programming model and runtime system extensions.
  • Development of tests to verify correctness and performance.
  • Participation in project-level publications, meetings and trainings.
  • Development of technical documentation and project deliverables.
  • Contributions to international peer-reviewed publications.
 
Requirements
 
  • Education
    • Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Sciences, mathematics or a similar discipline.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Modern C++14 development.
    • Working knowledge of OpenMP and MPI.
    • Experience developing complex multi-threaded software with pthreads.
    • Experience with Unix/Linux environments.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Previous experience with HPC applications, programming models, runtime systems or computer systems architecture would be highly valued.
    • A history of committing to open source software would be a plus.
    • Contributions to original research, as evidenced by international peer reviewed publications would also be greatly appreciated.
  • Competences
    • Ability to work well in a team.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work independently and under set deadlines and pressure.
    • Fluency in English is essential.
    • Capacity to interact and build strong relations with a diverse community, including our team and the project partners.
 
Conditions
 
  • The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Sciences Department
