Autonomic Systems and e-Business Platforms

OVERVIEW

Current trends in service computing are moving towards the creation of generic and shared execution environments to run all kind of business applications. The goal is to create large pools of resources where users can run their computing tasks, independently of their nature. This kind of generic computing clusters are known as computing clouds. Data centers and compute clouds rely on advanced middleware architectures to deliver services to the customers. Thus, the middleware becomes a critical part of the execution platform for many of today’s software applications because it has an immediate impact on the quality of service perceived by the customers.
The management middleware must deal with a number of  performance challenges, such as maximizing efficiency and performance while maintaining predictable behavior; increasing power efficiency;  and considering fairness goals. All these objectives must be observed even in presence of system failures and severe workload changes while fulfilling the agreed QoS with customers.
Due that challenges the complexity of modern middleware is growing at an exponential rate and due to this, only self-managing, or autonomic computing technology can reasonably stem the difficulties that this complexity brings. With regards to research in ICT, one of BSC-CNS's commitments is to push research forward in the area of Autonomic Computing, focusing on the middleware for modern large-scale computing systems that range from data centers to cloud computing, contributing to build a more smart ICT environments. Bearing this in mind, BSC-CNS creates the Autonomic Systems and e-Business Platforms research line based on the previous experience of the Barcelona eDragon Research Group  within the High Performance Computing Group from the Technical University of Catalonia.



OBJECTIVES

Research on autonomic resource allocation and heterogeneous workload management with performance and energy-efficiency goals for Internet-scale virtualized data centers comprising heterogeneous clusters of hybrid hardware.

PROJECTS/AREAS

The current group working areas are:
  • BLO-driven autonomic resource allocation and scheduling for virtualized service providers on a market-oriented cloud computing environment, proposing improvements and new extensions in SLA, Energy, Risk and Trust management.
  • Workload management and characterization for large scale data analytics applications on accelerated clusters.
  • De-centralized strategies for making placement decisions on Internet-scale infrastructures through the use of P2P technologies with performance and energy-saving goals.
  • Exploiting emerging accelerators hardware and improving their  programming models with extensions and integrations (integrating OpenCL/Hadoop or PM developing as CellMT, MARS, MapReduce on Cell).

Current involved projects:

  • NUBA project (Normalized Usage of Business-oriented Architectures) (2009-2012). NUBA is a strategic research  program (MITyC TSI-020301-2009-30) funded by the Avanza2  R&D Plan of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade and coordinated by  Telefonica I+D with 8 partners. The aim of NUBA is to advance the state-of-the-art in business models and technology for the real-time deployment  of federated Cloud platforms, integrating infrastructure from different providers, to execute elastic  business services with  the required QoS and minimizing the energy consumption. http://nuba.morfeo-project.org.
  • XtreemOS (FP6 IST European project): Building and Promoting a Linux-based Operating System to Support Virtual Organizations for Next Generation Grids.
