OVERVIEW

Grid computing aims to offer tools and mechanisms that enable the sharing, selection, and aggregation of a wide variety of geographically distributed computational resources in a transparent way. The research done in this team is based in the former expertise of the group, and extending it towards the aspects of grid computing that can benefit from this expertise. The main topics that has been tackled by the team are: MPI prediction in grid environments, programming models for the grid, and resource management and scheduling in grid environments. The research in grid computing is concentred mainly in two internal research projects: GRID superscalar and eNANOS. Besides, the center is involved in the following projects: Business Experiments in Grid (BEinGRID), Business Objective-drive Reliable and Intelligent Grids for Busines (BREIN), CoreGRID Network of execellence , DEISA Distributed European Infraestructure for Supercomputing Applications, HPC Europa, Latin American Grid, The Spanish Thematic Network in Grid Middleware , XtreemOS, OGF Europe and IS-ENES


OBJECTIVES

  • Do research and development in programming environments for grid and clusters. Specifically, the objective is to offer tools and environments that enable to develop applications that are transparent to the underlying computational grid (grid-unaware applications). What is more, techniques as concurrency exploitation will be apploied to efficiently execut the application in the grid.
  • Do research and development in meta-scheduling, monitoring and prediction for grid environments. This research is specially focused to enable grids of parallel computers and to efficiently run parallel applications (MPI, OpenMP or mixed) in these environments.
  • Maintain and manage a small grid with BSC-CNS resources and its connections to external resources, with the objective of testing BSC-CNS research developments in grid and allowing to connect to grid projects' testbeds.


PROJECTS/AREAS

  • GRID Superscalar: GRID superscalar is a Grid programming environment that allows to simply program applications that will be efficiently run on a computational Grid. GRID superscalar is able to parallelize, at runtime and at task level, a sequential application and execute the application in a computational Grid. The used approach is able to take benefit from those applications that are composed of coarse grained tasks. These tasks can be of the size of a simulation, a program, a solver... These kinds of applications are very common in bioinformatics, computational chemistry and other scientific fields.
  • eNANOS: The eNANOS project aims to provide an execution platform for parallel applications on distributed heterogeneous systems, from clusters of shared memory machines to interoperable Grid systems. Its main research activity is on the field of resource management and scheduling for distributed heterogeneous systems. The proposed strategies focus on providing a good scheduling support at the lowest scheduling layers to improve the higher scheduling layers of the architecture. Moreover, they are oriented towards improving the job execution performance (in terms of slowdown) and maximizing the resource utilization.
