Forest fires

Forest fires have a great impact on the environment and can pose a threat to property and human lives and health. The occurrence of fire in natural vegetation is dependent on human activities and climate variability. European countries of the Mediterranean basin are frequently plagued by drought episodes (e.g. during the summer of 2016), causing dangerous wildfires which result in deaths, health problems and economic losses. And the impact of forest fires is not limited to Europe, but extends worldwide. Drought prediction can be useful to have information on the risk of fires, useful for both land and agricultural management.

Seasonal prediction of wildfire danger appears as a priority for health, safety and economic welfare. We develop seasonal wildfire predictions that have different applications:

  • Awareness raising
  • Wildfire prevention and suppression strategies
